Ihr lateinischer Name lautet Selaginella lepydophylla.
Da man sie beliebig oft zu neuem Leben erwecken kann, wird sie auch die Auferstehungspflanze genannt.
Sie wurde zuerst von den Kreuzrittern und später von den Pilgern, die Wallfahrten in das Heilige Land unternahmen, nach Europa gebracht und als heilige Pflanze verehrt.
Sie ist eine mystische Pflanze, die niemals stirbt.
Es hieß, dass in einem Haus, in dem die Rose von Jericho aufbewahrt wird, Glück und Segen herrschen sollen.
Außerdem existiert ein alter Brauch, dass man sie zu Weihnachten und zu Ostern aufblühen lässt und den erstaunten Kindern vorführt.
